Marking Watkinson
Books
Use extra care in handling special collections
books! Older imprints may have fragile pages or bindings.
- Use a #2 pencil to print the call number
(found on the control slip) in two places: On the back of the
title page, centered, about 1/4 of the way down the page, and on the
bookplate.
- Mark as neatly as possible.
Erase any previous call numbers. If there is no bookplate inside the
front cover, check inside the back cover. Note that pamphlets usually
do not have bookplates. Smaller, newer bookplates are marked bottom
center. Older, larger bookplates are marked in the upper left corner.
- You will generally come across three types
of bookplates:
- 1) Bookplates that are unrelated to Trinity
or Watkinson, e.g., former owner bookplates. Do not mark these at
all.
- 2) Bookplates that say 'Watkinson library'
on them already. Mark these but note there is no need to write 'WATK.'
- 3) Bookplates that need to be marked yet do
not already have 'Watkinson library' written on them (typically an Enders
bookplate). You will need to write 'WATK.' on these. Be
sure to include the name of any special collection (BARNARD, SPECIAL, PRIV.PRESS, etc.) in the call number. Examples:

Call Number Labels
- Call number labels are printed the same as
regular books, but usually get applied to the top of an acid-free tab
instead of the spine. The tab is then inserted into the book with the
call number showing up on top.
- Attach labels to the spine for only
Watkinson Reference, Trinitiana theses, and any items returning
from our commercial bindery. Assume that anything else will have the call number label
applied to a paper tab unless instructed otherwise by a cataloging staff
member.
Final Steps
- Do not remove anything from the books.
Leave any other cards, papers, etc. in the volumes. DO NOT THROW
ANYTHING OUT!
- When the truck is completed, bring it to
your supervisor. After the truck is revised, take it to
the Watkinson Library. Leave the truck in their workroom.
