Voyages & Travels

Van Lennep, Henry J. The oriental album. New York: A. D. F. Randolph, 1862.

The Library's travel literature begins with Bernhard von Breyenbach's account of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (1490 ed.) and includes travel literature covering the globe. The largest concentration of primary source material relates to North America from the 16th through the 19th century. Among exploring expeditions represented are those of Captain James Cook, Lewis and Clark, and Charles Wilkes. Another highlight is a comprehensive collection of the 17th-century English publisher John Ogilby's deluxe publications of travel accounts. Collections of travel narratives in orignal editions of Ramusio, Purchas and Pinkerton, and a complete set of the Hakluyt Society series and other collections of reprinted travel literature.
