Box 9/1 of the Resist Collection is a collection of the financial files from the New Social Perspectives publication Liberation Magazine. Resist funded Liberation several times during its life, but the magazine fell into financial trouble in the late 1970s. At this time Paul Lauter, National Director, among others at Resist proposed the takeover of the company in an attempt to resurrect the magazine. Lauter called the magazine a "new left publication which was anarchist, libertarian, pacifist..." (from an interview with Paul Lauter July 22, 1998) and which held similar political views to those Resist was trying to convey through its own work. It was for the preservation of this kinship in political theory and practice that Lauter and Resist attempted to save the dying magazine. The files in this section are mostly dated to 1977 and 1978 and are a collection of canceled checks, old bills, fundraising attempts, and other financial interests concerned by the new Liberation master committee. Unfortunately Liberation still went bankrupt eventually and the magazine was put out of print several years after the Resist takeover. When asked, Lauter says that one of the main reasons for its failure was the magazine’s length. Liberation is a lengthy publication and while its message is timely, it was often too long to hold interest, and people were reluctant to renew subscriptions.
