About Interlibrary Loan

Materials not owned by our Library can often be borrowed from another through Interlibrary Loan ("ILL") using ILLiad.  Access is automatically provided to all current students and College employees.  College retirees should contact Mrs. Angelo, Access Services Librarian, to setup an account.

Please note that ILL requests often have shorter loan periods than Trinity items, as determined by the owning library.  Materials needed for longer use may need to be returned and re-requested from a second library, or can be proposed as a purchase request.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is ILL different from CTW? Which one should I use?

ILL via ILLiad is our way to obtain items not available through our CTW library consortium (Connecticut College, Trinity College, Wesleyan University).

How do I request something via ILL?

Items can be requested in a variety of ways:

  1. Search for the item in OCLC WorldCat (http://www.worldcat.org) and select “Borrow from another library” to get a pre-populated form.
  2. Search one of our article databases. Wherever you see the “Get It” button, you can click to find out if Trinity holds the item. If we don't own it, click “Submit an Interlibrary loan request” to request an item through ILL.
  3. Use the blank ILL request form found here.

Please complete as many information boxes on the ILL request form as possible. Include volume/number and pages for article requests.

Note that audio and video recordings are typically not available through ILL.

How long will it take to get what I need?

Plan ahead! ILL procurement can take anywhere from 24 hours to several weeks to obtain so please plan accordingly.

How will my book or article be delivered? How will I know when it has arrived?

How can I check the status of my ILL requests?

Go to the web site http://illiad.trincoll.edu.  Log in, then select "All Requests" from the menu to see a list of all your past ILL requests and the current status of each.

What happens with late returns?

A courtesy notice is sent to the borrower a few days in advance of the due date, followed by an overdue notice at one and eight days overdue.

After eight days, all borrowing privileges are suspended until the materials are returned and a bill will be issued.  Materials not returned within 30 days will incur an additional $200.00 administrative charge.  Additional charges may be assessed when we receive the final bill from the owing library.

Borrowers who fail to return items within 30 days of their due date will have their future ILL borrowing privileges limited to one active request at a time.
